I sold a story to Dreamspinner Press’s steampunk anthology, Steamed Up. This will be out towards the end of the year, I believe (not sure of the exact dates, and it’s off the open calls page now). My story, “Untouchable”, is a steampunk take on Prohibition-era gangs and FBI agents. I had loads of fun writing it — it’s written in a stripped-down style meant to be reminiscent of The Untouchables and film noir in general, and it was fun to play with some steampunk ideas in a setting that’s very different from the usual Victorian-era ruffles-and-gaslights steampunk milieu.
… I might do more with this setting, actually. It’s a world in which the internal combustion engine never took off, so in the late 1920s all the cars are electric and there are steam-powered dirigibles gliding over the Illinois prairie. And there are clockworks, of course. (Can’t have steampunk without clockworks!) I think there are more stories to be told in this world, whether I revisit these characters or go somewhere else.
