Monday in Alaska – Oct. 21

October continues to be unusually snow-free, which on the one hand is wonderful because I love fall and we’re getting an extra-long one this year … but on the other hand, it’s been brown and gloomy for weeks now.

Walking with the dog.

And I figured I’d share a photo of the absolutely terrifying homemade bridge over our creek. My husband knocked this together from scrap lumber the first year we lived here just so we could get to the other side. We always meant to replace it with something better, but nine years later we’re still using it, even though some of the plywood scraps are rotting through and sag alarmingly when you step on them. It’s funny how life works out that way, and makeshift workarounds become The Way Things Are Done … do you have anything like that around your house?

I'm a writer and artist living in Fairbanks, Alaska.
